Create useful flashcards from a PDF vocabulary list

A word list becomes more useful when each card tests one intended meaning. A PDF containing many unconnected words gives the generator little context. Prefer a list with definitions or short example sentences, then decide whether you want to recognize a word, retrieve it from a clue or use it in a sentence.

Make cards from your PDF

Check the PDF column order

Vocabulary sheets often place words in one column and meanings in another. Extracted text can interleave columns or detach an example from its word. Start with a small excerpt and compare the first few pairs with the PDF. If the pairings are already wrong, prepare a clearer text layout rather than spending every review session repairing mismatched definitions.

Choose a single sense per card

For an ambiguous word, state the intended context in the front. A recognition prompt can show the word in a sentence and ask for its meaning there. A production prompt can give a precise definition and ask for the word. Avoid reversing every card automatically: a broad definition may admit several valid words and create an unfair production question.

Worked example: two focused cards

These original editorial examples illustrate question design. They are not a live AI conversion or an official question bank. Use the wording and scope of your own source when editing a generated deck.

In “a concise summary,” what does concise mean?
Brief while including the essential information.
Which word means brief while retaining essential information?
Concise. Accept this prompt only within a set where the intended word is clear.

Review wording as well as spelling

Check part of speech, accents, capitalization and any usage condition supplied by your list. Keep a short example when it distinguishes the intended meaning. If pronunciation matters, use a reliable language reference outside the deck; ordinary text export is not an audio vocabulary package. Group cards by useful context so a later review does not depend on remembering the original list order.

Convert, check, then study

  1. Prepare a short PDF excerpt with the relevant text near the beginning. Upload it using the PDFtoDeck generator; check that the selected pages contain the topic you intend to study.
  2. Generate an AI draft, then read every question and answer against the source. Correct missing conditions, split overloaded answers and remove unsupported details before treating the deck as study material.
  3. Use Study now for a review session, download an Anki .apkg deck or CSV, or copy tab-separated text for Quizlet. Choose an export your destination can actually import and test a small set before moving a larger deck.

Limits, cost and document handling

Free generation includes 3 conversions per day, the first 5 PDF pages per conversion and up to 20 cards. Pro costs $3.99/mo or $29.99/yr. A generated deck can miss concepts or contain errors; use your source to decide what belongs in the final set.

The browser reads your PDF; clear English scans use on-device OCR. Extracted text is sent to the PDFtoDeck server and DeepSeek for AI generation. Process documents you have permission to use, keep sensitive information out of uploads and check the privacy policy for details.

Questions about this workflow

Will every word receive a card?

No coverage guarantee is made. Compare the reviewed deck with your selected list; free generation is limited to up to twenty cards.

Can I use a list without definitions?

A definition-rich source is easier to verify. If you use bare words, check each generated meaning and intended sense against a reference you trust.
