Prepare handwritten notes for PDF flashcard generation
Handwriting is a difficult source for text extraction. PDFtoDeck supports on-device OCR for clear English scans, but that should not be read as reliable handwriting recognition. If your pages contain cursive writing, crowded margins or abbreviations, begin by transcribing the important section into readable text and exporting it as PDF.
Transcribe the relationships, not the page layout
Write out what arrows, boxes and short labels mean. If an arrow connects two concepts, state whether it means causes, follows or contrasts with. Expand an abbreviation when it could have several meanings. Keep one short topic per excerpt. A clean paragraph describing the relationship is a stronger source than a photograph of a page whose meaning depends on your personal notation.
Check symbols before trusting a draft
Compare extracted or generated text with the original notes, especially negative words, decimal points, units and similar-looking characters. A single missing not can reverse a card. If a passage cannot be read confidently, return to the lecture or textbook source rather than guessing what you meant. Keep the original scan as a reference while editing the transcribed version.
Worked example: two focused cards
These original editorial examples illustrate question design. They are not a live AI conversion or an official question bank. Use the wording and scope of your own source when editing a generated deck.
- What should an unexplained arrow become in a transcription?
- A sentence naming both concepts and the relationship between them.
- Why check a missing negative word?
- It can reverse the meaning of a question or answer.
Preserve context that memory supplied
Handwritten notes often omit explanations because you understood them in class. A later card needs that context written explicitly. Replace this one is faster with the named items and comparison condition. Remove crossed-out statements before creating the PDF. Review a few generated questions first; if they reveal repeated uncertainty, improve the transcription before using another conversion on a larger excerpt.
Convert, check, then study
- Prepare a short PDF excerpt with the relevant text near the beginning. Upload it using the PDFtoDeck generator; check that the selected pages contain the topic you intend to study.
- Generate an AI draft, then read every question and answer against the source. Correct missing conditions, split overloaded answers and remove unsupported details before treating the deck as study material.
- Use Study now for a review session, download an Anki .apkg deck or CSV, or copy tab-separated text for Quizlet. Choose an export your destination can actually import and test a small set before moving a larger deck.
Limits, cost and document handling
Free generation includes 3 conversions per day, the first 5 PDF pages per conversion and up to 20 cards. Pro costs $3.99/mo or $29.99/yr. A generated deck can miss concepts or contain errors; use your source to decide what belongs in the final set.
The browser reads your PDF; clear English scans use on-device OCR. Extracted text is sent to the PDFtoDeck server and DeepSeek for AI generation. Process documents you have permission to use, keep sensitive information out of uploads and check the privacy policy for details.
Questions about this workflow
Does PDFtoDeck guarantee handwriting recognition?
No. Clear English scan OCR is available, but handwriting, diagrams and personal shorthand may need manual transcription before generation.
What should I do with an unreadable note?
Consult a reliable original source or clarify the note before making a card. An AI answer is not evidence of what an unclear handwritten passage meant.
