Make flashcards from clear English PDF scans
Prepare readable English PDF scans for on-device OCR, check recognition errors, and review editable flashcards before studying or exporting.
Make flashcards from clear English PDF scans
A scanned PDF contains page images instead of selectable text. PDFtoDeck can use on-device OCR for clear English scans, then send the extracted text for flashcard generation. Readability of the source matters at both stages.
Separate recognition from card quality
Consider this illustrative printed sentence: “Diffusion does not require cellular energy.” If recognition reads “does require” by missing a small word, a fluent-looking card can still be wrong. A useful question would be “Does diffusion require cellular energy?” with the answer “No.”
This is an editorial recognition-check example, not a captured OCR run or an accuracy benchmark. Compare the words and the generated answer with the visible page. A good-looking layout alone is not evidence that the scan was read correctly.
Prepare a readable English scan
Use upright pages with sharp printed text, even lighting and enough contrast between text and background. Crop away large empty borders without cutting off words. Split a long document into a short, topic-focused PDF so the relevant material appears inside the first five pages.
Clear English print is the supported starting point. Handwriting, unfamiliar languages, dense multi-column layouts, complex tables and mathematical notation need extra checking; this guide does not promise accurate recognition for those cases.
Check the fragile details
Look for dropped words such as “not,” mixed-up digits, punctuation, units, subscripts and similar-looking characters such as 0/O or 1/l. Compare definitions and numbers with the scan before studying. Edit or remove generated cards that cannot be verified from the visible page.
If the output is empty or unreliable, try a sharper scan or a text PDF from the original author. An existing selectable-text PDF avoids the OCR stage. Inspect a text-based sample PDF or the homepage’s prebuilt sample deck to distinguish file-readability problems from the card workflow. Those samples are not scanned-PDF demonstrations.
Generation limits and privacy
Free generation includes 3 conversions per day, the first 5 PDF pages per conversion and up to 20 cards. Review the generated questions and answers before studying. The result is a draft, not a guarantee of complete coverage or factual accuracy.
Your browser reads the PDF. Clear English scans use on-device OCR. Extracted text is sent to the PDFtoDeck server and DeepSeek to generate cards. Use material you have permission to process, avoid sensitive documents and read the privacy policy before converting.
OCR running locally does not make the entire flashcard-generation workflow local. Only share extracted text you are comfortable sending for generation.
How to use the tool
- Prepare clear, upright English printed pages in a PDF.
- Choose the scan in the converter and let the browser read the pages.
- Generate cards, keeping the first-five-page and twenty-card limits in mind.
- Compare every card with the visible scan, especially negatives, numbers and units.
- Edit or discard uncertain cards, then study or export the reviewed deck.
Questions about this workflow
Can I use handwriting or a non-English scan?
The supported starting point is a clear English scan. Handwriting and other languages are not guaranteed; use a readable text PDF where possible.
Is all processing on my device?
OCR runs on your device, but extracted text is sent to the server and DeepSeek to generate flashcards.
What should I do if a scan produces poor cards?
Compare with the original page, correct or discard unreliable cards, and try a sharper scan or a selectable-text PDF.
