Convert a PDF into editable CSV flashcards
CSV is useful when you want to inspect a deck in a spreadsheet before choosing a study app. PDFtoDeck generates question-and-answer drafts from PDF text and exports the edited cards as CSV. This workflow is about portable rows, rather than a direct connection to a flashcard account.
Plan the two-column structure
Treat the first column as the question and the second as the answer. Choose a short source section with clear definitions or relationships. A paragraph containing several facts should become several rows, not one cell containing the entire paragraph. If you need tags, chapter numbers or source references, add those separately in your spreadsheet after exporting; the tool exports question and answer fields.
Import without shifting fields
Download CSV after editing your draft. Open it with a CSV-aware import dialog and inspect the preview before accepting the delimiter and encoding. The export quotes fields so punctuation inside an answer can remain inside one cell. It does not include a header row: tell the importer that the first row is a card. Formula-like beginnings are prefixed for spreadsheet safety; inspect them if your material contains equations.
Worked example: two focused cards
These original editorial examples illustrate question design. They are not a live AI conversion or an official question bank. Use the wording and scope of your own source when editing a generated deck.
- What does a CSV card row represent?
- One question field and one answer field.
- Why preview a CSV import?
- To confirm separators, encoding and field mapping before importing all rows.
Test portability before a full import
Check a question containing a comma and an answer containing quotation marks. Both should still occupy exactly two columns. Save an untouched export before adding extra spreadsheet fields. Your eventual study app may expect headers, different separators or a particular field order, so adapt a copy to that documented format rather than repeatedly editing the source PDF.
Convert, check, then study
- Prepare a short PDF excerpt with the relevant text near the beginning. Upload it using the PDFtoDeck generator; check that the selected pages contain the topic you intend to study.
- Generate an AI draft, then read every question and answer against the source. Correct missing conditions, split overloaded answers and remove unsupported details before treating the deck as study material.
- Use Study now for a review session, download an Anki .apkg deck or CSV, or copy tab-separated text for Quizlet. Choose an export your destination can actually import and test a small set before moving a larger deck.
Limits, cost and document handling
Free generation includes 3 conversions per day, the first 5 PDF pages per conversion and up to 20 cards. Pro costs $3.99/mo or $29.99/yr. A generated deck can miss concepts or contain errors; use your source to decide what belongs in the final set.
The browser reads your PDF; clear English scans use on-device OCR. Extracted text is sent to the PDFtoDeck server and DeepSeek for AI generation. Process documents you have permission to use, keep sensitive information out of uploads and check the privacy policy for details.
Questions about this workflow
Does the CSV contain a header row?
The current export contains card rows without column headers. Add your own headers only if your destination expects them.
Can I use CSV in any study app?
Only if that app supports an appropriate text import. Check its current requirements and test two rows; CSV export alone does not guarantee compatibility.
