Turn a PDF study guide into answerable flashcards

A study guide may be a checklist of topics rather than a source of answers. Before converting it, distinguish statements you can study directly from prompts that require another source. The aim is a deck aligned to your objectives, not a convincing-looking answer for every empty heading.

Make cards from your PDF

Separate objectives from supporting notes

Highlight which items contain an explanation and which merely say know or understand a topic. If the guide gives only headings, prepare a permitted notes excerpt with the actual definitions and relationships. Keep the checklist outside the generator as a coverage map. This avoids asking an AI draft to fill gaps that the uploaded material never answers.

Make broad objectives testable

Break compare the two processes into a question about one meaningful dimension, followed by another dimension if needed. Change understand the timeline into prompts about an event, sequence and cause rather than a single enormous answer. Where the objective requires calculation or essay writing, retain a separate practice task instead of counting a definition card as full preparation.

Worked example: two focused cards

These original editorial examples illustrate question design. They are not a live AI conversion or an official question bank. Use the wording and scope of your own source when editing a generated deck.

How can a broad comparison objective become a focused card?
Name the two items and ask about one specified difference.
What should happen to an unanswered study-guide heading?
Find a supporting source before accepting an answer into the deck.

Record gaps after reviewing the draft

Work down the original checklist and identify a card or practice task for each objective. Mark missing support as a reading task. Remove two cards that ask the same thing in slightly different wording unless they test genuinely different retrieval directions. A short deck with explicit gaps is easier to improve than a long deck that conceals unsupported answers.

Convert, check, then study

  1. Prepare a short PDF excerpt with the relevant text near the beginning. Upload it using the PDFtoDeck generator; check that the selected pages contain the topic you intend to study.
  2. Generate an AI draft, then read every question and answer against the source. Correct missing conditions, split overloaded answers and remove unsupported details before treating the deck as study material.
  3. Use Study now for a review session, download an Anki .apkg deck or CSV, or copy tab-separated text for Quizlet. Choose an export your destination can actually import and test a small set before moving a larger deck.

Limits, cost and document handling

Free generation includes 3 conversions per day, the first 5 PDF pages per conversion and up to 20 cards. Pro costs $3.99/mo or $29.99/yr. A generated deck can miss concepts or contain errors; use your source to decide what belongs in the final set.

The browser reads your PDF; clear English scans use on-device OCR. Extracted text is sent to the PDFtoDeck server and DeepSeek for AI generation. Process documents you have permission to use, keep sensitive information out of uploads and check the privacy policy for details.

Questions about this workflow

Can I convert a guide that contains only questions?

You can try, but it provides little grounding for answers. Use explanatory notes and verify the draft rather than treating generated answers as an answer key.

How do I know whether my guide is covered?

Match each objective to a specific reviewed card or another practice task. Card count alone does not establish coverage.
